Chapin Area Information

In the area just north of Lake Murray in the northwestern corner of Lexington is the 100+ year-old town of Chapin.  Settled in the 1700s by Dutch and German immigrants, the town was named for Martin Chapin who moved south from New York in the mid 1800s and established a successful lumber mill and, when the opportunity arose, he sold land to the railroad for transporting lumber to more distant markets. The town that evolved around the lumber mill and the train station took Chapin's name and was incorporated on Christmas Eve 1889.

Tremendous change came to the people and the landscape of Chapin in 1927 when the Saluda River was dammed to form Lake Murray and provide hydro-electric power for South Carolina's Midlands. The lake flooded 50,000 acres and the dam itself consumed an additional 99 acres. The entire area surrounding Chapin rapidly transformed from predominantly single family farms to an industrial utility center with a beautiful recreational lake that appealed to local residents and visitors alike.

The lives of some 5,000 people were directly affected as land was acquired. Three churches, six schools and 193 graveyards were removed. To some, the building of the dam brought employment. New people moved in. New students from other sections of the country were welcomed into the schools. And for all of the upheaval it caused then, few in the 1920s could have imagined the tremendous impact Lake Murray would continue to have today --- far beyond its original purpose of providing a source of electric power.

The lake is one of Chapin's grandest assets, the lure that attracts people from all parts of the country, who are looking for a great place to live and raise a family. And Chapin is truly "The Capital of Lake Murray."

Students in Chapin attend schools in School District Five, where the students traditionally rank among the best average SAT scores in South Carolina. The schools are regularly recognized for their outstanding customer service and the high levels of academic achievement of their students. Since 1993, District Five students have earned the highest SAT average in the state for all but four years. The district is comprised of 12 elementary schools, 4 middle, and 5 high schools (including Dutch Fork, Chapin and Irmo High Schools).

Until a few decades ago, most churches in the Chapin area were Lutheran.  But as new people begin moving to Chapin in the 1960's and 70's other denominations were established.  Today, the town proudly boasts growing congregations including Lutheran, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Episcopalian, as well as non-denominational churches.

Paul will go out of his way to ensure the selling experience was as easy and streamlined as possible. Paul ended up selling our home in less than a month.
