Often referred to as “a city within a city,” Forest Acres is located in the central midlands of South Carolina, on the eastern edge of the city of Columbia. The Forest Acres community offers an exceptional quality of life founded in friendliness, faith and civic pride. Nestled among old-growth pines and hardwoods, the City of Forest Acres was incorporated in 1935 in part to encourage the residential qualities that will always be appreciated as imparting a small town feel in an urban surrounding.
It would not be an exaggeration to think of Forest Acres as a wonderful oasis in an urban sea surrounded by the city of Columbia to the west and Fort Jackson, the nation’s largest Army training facility to the east. With their schools, churches, convenient shopping and dining, and ready access to an abundance of cultural events, Forest Acres is where many of its residents believe life is at its best.
As South Carolina's capital city grew in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, Forest Acres was a rural community in close in proximity to Columbia, but proudly removed from the "big city" hustle and bustle. But in the early 1930s, residents found themselves wishing for a particular city amenity – a sure water supply. As more homes got indoor plumbing, the privately owned water tanks and wells that had previously provided adequate water grew increasingly unreliable.
One of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal Programs, the Public Works Administration (WPA), offered grants for municipal water lines to incorporated areas. So, rather than to become a part of the City of Columbia, residents selected the name Forest Acres and incorporated as a town in 1935. By 1939 water lines were in place.
There are a wide variety of shopping and professional services available in Forest Acres at Richland Mall, Trenholm Plaza, several strip malls and a wide range of unique small shops and restaurants. The schools available in the area are excellent and part of the Richland County School District One system. Providence Hospital is also very conveniently located between Forest Acres and downtown Columbia on Forest Drive.
And, most of the residential areas in Forest Acres live up to the city’s name, with beautiful old-growth pine trees and hardwoods in abundance. There is a wide variety of real estate to choose from in the area, from the beautiful lakefront homes on Forest Lake to the ranch homes and cottages on the western side of town, generally considered to be one of the more desirable sections of the in-town neighborhoods.
The homes in Forest Acres range in size from 700 to 4,000 square feet. Prices range from $60,000 to 600,000 with the exception of several high-end, custom built million dollar homes.
