Gilbert is a town located in Lexington County, South Carolina and considered a part of the Greater Columbia area. It's convenient to the cities of Columbia, West Columbia, Cayce and Lexington. Gilbert is ideal for those desiring the quiet, rural and peaceful settings for their family and still looking for a commute time of less than 25 minutes to nearly everywhere in the Greater Columbia area including Lake Murray.
Lake Murray, named in honor of chief engineer William S. Murray, was completed in 1930 and is owned by SCE&G. It covers approximately 78 square miles of land and provides electricity for South Carolina's entire Midlands region.
The largest part of Lake Murray is in Lexington County, but portions of it also go into Saluda, Newberry, and Richland counties.
The town of Gilbert is famous for being the location of the annual Lexington County Peach Festival.
For over half a century, the town of Gilbert has hosted Lexington County's Peach Festival, recognized as one of the most successful and prestigious events of its kind in the southeast United States. Summer after summer in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, the community was alive with the harvesting, packing, and shipping of peaches. Today, we find only a few peach farms still in operation, however the peach remains (in our minds) the "Queen of all Fruits", and worthy of honor in this small Lexington County town.
The Lexington County Peach Festival is held every year during the 4th of July 4th weekend at the Gilbert Community Park. Festivities kick off every year at 8:30am and stretch into the night until 10:00pm when the day draws to a close with a dazzling display of fireworks. The Peach Pageant, Peach Parade, live entertainment, art contests, antique car show and many more exciting events take place in conjunction with the festival.
A member of one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina Lexington), Gilbert is a relatively "young town" with a median age of 32 and a median household income ($54,000) more than $10,000 higher than the South Carolina median household income ($44,000).
Gilbert has four schools that comprise the publiic education system for their residents: Gilbert Primary School, Gilbert Elementary School, Gilbert Middle School, and Gilbert High School and are all a part of Lexington School District 1. It's high school's mascot is the Indian.
If the rural lifestyle is appealing, and convenience is also important, Gilbert is is ideal. Located just 16 miles from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and 17 miles from the Lexington County Medical Center, and a few minutes further to the new South Carolina State Farmer's Market, you'll find the short drive well worth the time for the peace-of-mind setting that most residents of this Lexington County town enjoy.
