About West Columbia-
West Columbia is a community on the Congaree River in Lexington County graced with tree-lined streets, quaint shops, longtime residents as well as young families. Historic areas stand side-by-side with new development which adds to the charm and livability of West Columbia.
First chartered as a town in 1894 under the name Brookland, The United States Postal Service designated the area "New Brookland" since there already existed a town with the name Brookland. In 1936, the charter was changed to West Columbia. And even today, there are still many businesses, churches, and a high school that retain the Brookland and New Brookland names.
The Guignard family built the first bridge across the Congaree River. Made of wood, it provided not only access to the mill, but also eased transportation of the people and freight between West Columbia and Columbia. With the charter as a town, there also came a certain desire to be independent and self sustaining and the birth of a West Columbia business district with dry goods, a livery stable, a grocery store, post office, vegetable markets, and various mercantile stores. The trade center developed on what is now Meeting Street close to the river and a small portion on what is now known as State Street.
On March 3, 1905, a fire destroyed the Brookland community. The next ten years were spent rebuilding the homes and the building still seen on Meeting and State Streets. The river flooded every spring until the Dreher Shoals (Lake Murray) Dam was built. The river water would cover the wooden bridge which was replaced by the Gervais Street Bridge in 1927. In present day, the City provides a full range of municipal services including police and fire protection, street and sanitation services, recreational activities, planning and zoning and water and sewer services.
Protective of the natural beauty of the river and its small town feel, West Columbia sparkles on the river just across the Gervais Street and Blossom Street bridges from the capital city of Columbia. Neighbored by Cayce and Lexington, West Columbia is a riverfront city beginning to realize its untapped potential as well as it's very rich heritage.
