West Columbia, SC
Separated from South Carolina’s capital city by the Congaree River, West Columbia is located on the eastern border of Lexington County and near Columbia's city center or downtown district as well as the South Carolina State House and the Congaree Vista, more popularly known locally as "the Vista."
In 1894 when West Columbia was originally chartered as a town, it was called Brookland and was a popular residential area for employees of Columbia Mills, the world’s first electrically driven textile mill located across the river on the east bank of the Congaree. The name of the town changed to West Columbia in 1936.
Although the city only spans just over six square miles it, much like the city of Columbia, is experiencing growth and saw almost a 15% increase in population (according to the 2010 U. S. Census) following a 23% increase from 1990 to 2000.
Among West Columbia’s many recreational amenities are the Riverwalk and Riverbanks Zoo Botanical Gardens.
West Columbia is bordered to the south by its sister suburb, Cayce, SC.
